Severson, Linnen help lead TIC Hawks to Championship
On July 29, the TIC Hawks traveled to Winona, Minn., for the Tri-State basketball tournament, which included teams from Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Hawks started the day with a big win over Kasson-Mantorville, 46-38. Peyton Severson (LM) led the way with 13 points, followed by Deshaun Linnen’s (LM), 11, and Triston Yoder (GHV) chipping in 11 as well. In the semifinals, the Hawks rode a great defensive effort and hot shooting from Brandon Leber (FC) to rout Blooming Prairie, 64-40. Leber led the way with 19 points. In the championship game, the Hawks met the Minnesota Hawks. The game was tight throughout and tied with a minute left, when Linnen hit a big three-pointer and Yoder hit a shot from the top of the key, to put the Hawks up by a point with eight seconds left. A Linnen and Yoder double team forced a bad shot at the buzzer and the Hawks held on for a 58-57 win and the championship. Linnen led all scorers with 27 points, followed by Yoder’s 18. The TIC Hawks also won the the Marshalltown basketball tournament July 8, and finished the summer season with a record of 10-3.
