A birthday party is a fun way to recognize important milestones in a child’s life. Family and friends are invited to join in the fun, and everyone enjoys a day of celebration.
As I write this we just survived perhaps the biggest snowstorm of the season, and are bracing for another round later this week. It is not an April Fools joke, although it is indeed the month of April.
For me it started with Martin Luther King’s “Dream” speech in 1963 when he proclaimed: “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
For the most part, we Americans value expertise. We want our physicians to possess knowledge and experience. We want our lawyers to know the law inside out.
One of the major beauties of living in a democracy is not that we can freely vote for those who represent us, but also that we ourselves have the opportunity to be those doing the representation.
Every day at the News Media Alliance headquarters, a stack of newspapers arrives for myself and the staff.

Yank Magazine, a military weekly news magazine published during World War II, ran a lengthy spread on the 34th Division in March 1945. Men from all over the United States comprised the 34th, but at one time it had been densely populated with young men from Iowa. The writer of the article titled “...
Greetings from Capitol Hill: Water Quality Monday evening, the House considered HF 2451 which creates a wastewater and drinking water financial assistance program. The bill changes the current sales tax on metered water into excise tax of six percent. This tax, along with the Rebuild Iowa...
Dodging responsibility has been raised to an art form Over more than three decades in Congress, I had the chance to question a lot of federal officials. Most of the time I wasn’t after anything dramatic—I just wanted to understand who was responsible for certain decisions. Want to know how often I...

I get it, Mother Nature likes to frequently remind us who is actually in charge, and the seasons will change when she says they will change—and not a day sooner. That does not, however, mean that we have to enjoy the decisions she makes, especially when we are approaching the middle of April and...
Honoring Veterans The first official action of the Senate this past week was the passage of a resolution commemorating April 6, 2016, as the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I want to sincerely thank all veterans who have put themselves at risk in order...
Hearing Protection Act Last week the Iowa Legislature sent HF 2279 to the governor’s desk for approval. HF 2279 legalizes the sale and use of gun suppressors which muffle the sound of various firearms. Individuals wishing to purchase a suppressor will be required to pass a federal background check...
