The race is on

A backward race, that has been ongoing for the past several years in the State of Iowa, seems like it is hitting full stride this legislative session.
The race, to which we are referring, is the race to the bottom in terms of K-12 education.
Iowa has prided itself for years about being one of the leaders in education, but now finds itself hanging on for dear life as state funding priorities have made K-12 eductation low man on the totem pole, in favor of corporate tax breaks and other misguided attampts to make the state more attractive for businesses and families to locate.
After several years of miniscule increases to the amount of state funding provided local districts, republican legislators have outdone themselves this year in offering up a 1.1 percent increase—that when taken in the real world where insurance, salaries, utilities and equipment all increase each and every year—actually represents a step backward for most districts.
Money is not the total answer, but it certainly allows one the ability to put enough pieces together, so that the puzzle can be more easily solved.
This matters to many rural districts, who struggle with steady (if they are lucky), or declining enrollments, and trying to stay viable as a district.
It matters to our children, who are supposed to be our hope for the future, and need a solid educational base to develop into all that they can be.
It matters to our communities, as the school is the central focus and identity of most small towns, whether it be as one of the major employers or a rallying point as citizens follow sports teams or other school activities.
It is up to us as citizens, voters and adults to let our legislators know that 1.1 percent will not cut it, and we will not support those who look to harm the very communities they represent by gutting aid to one of the most vital parts of these towns. Should they not heed our advice and counsel, it is up to us to remember their actions the next time they ask for our vote.
