Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
In the midst of a worldwide health crisis the one thing which has become evident is the legion of people who are absolutely essential to a community’s well-being. The sacrificial and selflessness of these persons is inspiring. And, in the wake of these essential personnel, whether as volunteers or wage workers, is the indispensable and essential support of their community.
All of this makes me so grateful to the citizens, businesses, churches and organizations of the Lake Mills community and surrounding area for their support of the essential work of the Lake Mills Food Shelf. While the list of supporters is more numerous than this space affords, I would like to express our humble gratitude to individuals like the person who donated 10 percent of their stimulus check or the woman who donated bags and boxes of fresh apples, and the persons who donated Personal Protection Equipment (gloves & masks) for our Food Shelf workers not to mention the numerous financial gifts from citizens of the community. There are businesses like Diamond Jo Casino, whereupon the suspension of operations due to Covid-19 donated a truck load of fresh fruits and vegetables; there is the LM American Legion when they discovered the LM Girl Scouts had to close their sales stands due to the pandemic offered to purchase the remaining boxes and donate the cookies to the Food Shelf; LM Winnebago Industry employees donated a number of hams, turkeys and other food items in this precarious moment of time; and the manager of David’s Market Place continues the practice of offering customers the opportunity to purchase a grocery sack of food to be donated to the Food Shelf as a means of witnessing to our communities values and beliefs of helping those who confront food scarcity.
Food assistance at this critical time is more essential than ever and the compassion of the citizens of Lake Mills is a cause for hope. Again and again, we hear from our shoppers at the Food Shelf of what the Food Shelf does to create hopeful lives for themselves and their families. The LM Food Shelf is appreciatively indebted to the faithful involvement of the community in these hopeful efforts
