Letter to the Editor

Unlike what Governor Reynolds, Senate Majority Leader Bill Dix, and Speaker of the House Linda Upmeyer say, the House and Senate water quality proposals won’t do anything to clean up our water—they basically take money away away from other underfunded budgets and flush it down the toilet.  We have to stop the pollution at its source rather than just clean the pollution out at our drinking water utility companies.
Bill Dix and Linda Upmeyers’ hands are too deep in the pockets of Big Agribusiness to make any meaningful changes to clean up our water.  Senator Dix PAC, “Friends of Dix”, received at least $65,000 from Jeff and Debra Hansen, Iowa’s largest pork producer that is trying to build 19 new factory farms across the state.
Dix, Upmeyer, and Reynolds are bought and sold by the very industries that are polluting our water.
The people have spoken.  We want a moratorium on factory farms, we want polluters to pay, we want to stop the consolidation of this polluting industry.  And now over 20 percent of all Iowa counties are saying the same thing.  They are sick and tired of factory farms in their communities.
If Republicans and Democrats at the statehouse don’t see the commonsense solutions to Iowa’s water crisis then it’s time to elect leaders that do, like Cathy Glasson for Governor, Brenda Brink for Iowa House, and Tracy Freese for Iowa Senate.
 Sincerely,
Nick Schutt
