Virgil Eldon Okland

Virgil Eldon Okland, 84, Aurora, Colo., passed away Monday, March 7, at the Colorado State Veterans Home from complications of Parkinson’s. Funeral services with military honors were held Thursday, March 24, at Ft. Logan National Cemtery, Englewood, Colo.
Virgil was born Dec. 31, 1931 to John and Alice (Westendorf) Okland in Lake Mills. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended schools in rural Winnebago and Worth counties.
Virgil married Verna Moen, Dec. 26, 1950, in Albert Lea, Minn., where they resided until he was inducted into the Marine Corps in 1952. He was stationed in Barstow, Calif.
After the service, they returned to Albert Lea, Minn., where he worked for Streaters and the Singer Co.
In 1967, their home was damaged by a tornado. Soon after, they moved their family to the Denver, Colo., area. Virgil worked in the uranium mines and as a blaster in Central City. He also did carpentry work.
After his retirement, he was finally able to enjoy his favorite pasttime, hunting.
Virgil is survived by three daughters: Diane Duclos, Nancy (Jamie) Macbeth, and Marta Okland; grandchildren: Kurt Helm, Amy (Brett) Darnell, Jason Allen, and Matthew Shobe; his former wife, Verna; brothers: Donald (Pat), Robert (Juanita), and Richard (Kim); sisters: Marilyn (Ralph) Olson, Karen (Duane) Abrahams, and Patricia (Myron) Levisen; sister-in-law, Carolyn Okland; aunts: Helen Pederson, Ruby Butler, and Ruth Zingg; uncle, Lloyd (Margaret) Okland; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughters, Monica and Marsha; sister, Linda; and brothers, Ronald and Michael.
