Vernon B. Hagen
Vernon B. Hagen, 91, Lake Mills, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones at the Lake Mills Care Center. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 8, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with Pastor Joel L. Guttormson officiating. Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235 will provide military rites. Vern’s family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills. The family will have a private inurnment at Beaver Creek Cemetery at a later time. The family also suggests that memorials be made to Salem Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Vernon Bennett Hagen was born Nov. 22, 1926 to Jens and Elizabeth (Lee) Hagen at home in Joice.
Vernon attended school in Joice, and graduated in 1944. After high school he enlisted in the Army Specialized Training program in Brookings, S.D. After he turned 18, he was sent to Camp Hood, Texas, for basic training. After basic training Vernon was sent to the Philippines to train for the invasion of Japan. He served in occupied Japan for 18 months. He returned to the U.S. and was honorably discharged in November 1946.
After the service, Vernon attended Iowa State College for a two-year program in Dairy Plant Management. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Carole Mae Heimdal, July 25 1948. Vernon worked at the creamery in Thornton, before buying the Sunset Creamery in Ellendale, N.D. In 1965, Vernon accepted a position at Deluxe Products in Lake Mills, where he worked until 1991 when he retired.
He loved the outdoors and his many fishing trips to Canada with family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting, golfing, camping and hiking. Vern participated in many community activities including building the Habitat for Humanity home with his good friend Jim Tweed. He loved all the family trips to Leech Lake, Minn., and other places. What he loved most was his family and helping them with home improvement projects. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren perform in various activities.
Vernon is survived by Carole, his loving wife of 70 years; his children: Steven and his wife, Sue, Rudyard, Mich.; Kathy Chose, Lake Mills; Gail and her husband, Dan Elser, Billings, Mont; Jane and her husband, Walt Syltie, Brookings, S.D.;, Russell and his wife, Lenora Hagen, Victor; and daughter-in-law, Hallie Hagen, New Ulm, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Alan; his son-in-law, Mark Chose; brothers: Hubert, Julian, Norman and Earl; sisters: Bernice Almelien and Avis Graves; along with many nieces and nephews.
