Sidney M. Kvale
Sidney M. Kvale, 85, Lake Mills, passed away at his home Saturday, May 25, 2019, surrounded by his family with the help of Albert Lea Mayo Clinic Hospice Care. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 1, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills with Pastor Rob Lanphere officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235. Cremation will take place following the service with a private inurnment at Sunnyside Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, May 31, from 5-7 p.m. at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the Asbury United Methodist Church siding fund; Albert Lea Mayo Clinic Hospice; or to the Sunnyside Cemetery Fund c/o Wayne Mannes.
Sidney M. Kvale, son of Selmer and Marie Peterson Kvale, was born Nov. 21, 1933 on a farm home south of Scarville. The family moved to a farm south of Lake Mills. Sid attended country school for eight years and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1951.
Sid farmed with his father for three years before entering the service in February 1954. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., then onto Fürth, Germany, Ninth Infantry Division. He served there until he contracted Rheumatic fever, spending three months there in hospitals, before being sent back to Great Lakes Naval Base Hospital for three months. He was then medically discharged in February of 1955.
Sid started farming in 1955 and married Vivian Baker on Aug. 7, 1955 in Forest City. Together they farmed until retirement. Three daughters were born to this union: Kristine, Susan, and Joan. Sidney served on Asbury Church boards, the Lake Mills MBT Bank board, and the Kiester Bank board. He worked as the county farm assessor and was on the Food Bank board. He was a member of Legion Post 235, VFW Post 6161 (life member), and DAV (life member).
Sidney is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Vivian; children: Kristine (Dennis), Susan (Wayne), and Joan (Kent); grandchildren: Andy, Aaron (Kristin), Mike (Julia), Ben (Ashley), Camille, and Claire; great-grandchildren: Karson, Kasey, Brynna, Kylee, Hallie, Maddie, Anika, baby-to-be, and Kennedy; step-great-grandchildren: Patrick, Morgan, and Aidan; brother, Stephen (Juli); sister, Jean; many nieces and nephews; and honorary daughter, Patty Alvine.
Sidney is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Marie; and brother-in-law, Harold.
