Ruth M. Johnson

Ruth M. Johnson, 88, Lake Mills, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017 at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit, Mason City. A funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 25, at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Burial was held in Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.Ruth’s family suggests that memorials be made to the Organ Fund at Winnebago Lutheran Church. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, was in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Margaret Johnson was born Oct. 3, 1928 in rural Lake Mills, the daughter of George and Hilma (Thompson) Kilen. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1946 and attended Luther Teachers College.
 On June 27, 1948, she was united in marriage to Andrew Palmer Johnson at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills.
She taught country school for awhile, and then stopped to raise her six children. She later worked at the Winnebago County Home, rural Lake Mills, for several years as activity director, where she headed many ceramic projects.
She loved her family very much. She had a passion for quilting and making layettes for school children. She was a wonderful cook and baker, specializing in lefsa. She was also meticulous about gardening, in particular, taking care of all of her flower bulbs that had been in her family for years.
Her memory is cherished by her children: Kathy Millett, Waterloo; Jean (Dr. Steven) Burns, Sac City; Mary Kruse, Mason City; Linda (Alan) Wharton, Latimer; and Curtis Johnson, Lake Mills; sister, Hilma (Loren) Stover, Bluff Springs, Ill.; sisters-in-law: Joyce Kilen, Shirley Tveit and Marilyn Johnson, all of Lake Mills; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Andrew, in 2012; son, Steven; grandson, Todd Burns; great-granddaughter, Abbie Wharton; son-in-law, Ron Millett; brother, Gordon Kilen; and sisters: Alice Kingland, Doris Bjorklund and Grace Beiser.
