Ruth I. Disrud

Ruth I. Disrud, Waverly, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly, with Pastor Nancy Larson officiating. Public visitation will be held Sunday, June 11, from 4-6 p.m.at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. Burial will be held at a later date in the Sion Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Mills. Memorials may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice, or the music department at Waverly-Shell Rock Schools. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, is assisting the family.
Ruth Isabelle Disrud was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Lake Mills, , the daughter of Walter Roy and Nora (Nystuen) Bergan. She was baptized and confirmed in Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills.
Ruth attended country school in rural Lake Mills, and then attended the Lake Mills High School, where she graduated in 1941 as salutatorian of her class. Ruth later attended Waldorf College, receiving her Associates Degree and Teaching Certificate. Ruth taught for one year in Hartley, and then returned to Lake Mills where she taught sixth grade for three years.
On Jan. 12, 1950, Ruth was united in marriage to Alfred “Al” Disrud at Sion Lutheran Church, Lake Mills. In July of 1950, the couple moved to Monroe, where they purchased the Monroe Mirror Newspaper, with their partners Warren and Alice Burman.
In 1957, the family moved to Forest City, where Ruth worked part-time at Waldorf College in the offices of the Dean of Students and the Chaplain.
The last move was in 1966 to Waverly, where she supported Al with his work, managed their home and cared for sons, John and Dan. Ruth lived in her home in Waverly until July 2009, when she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.
Ruth was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly, and was active early in her life with Sion Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, and was the church organist and choir director when not singing. She played for countless weddings, funerals and other events. Ruth was also a charter member of the ML P.E.O. in Waverly.  She truly loved her time spent teaching and assisting teachers to gain experience. In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed music, sewing, reading and playing games.
Ruth is survived by her two sons: John A. Disrud (Sue), Waverly; and Daniel L. Disrud, Plainfield; a brother, Don (Elaine) Bergan, Lake Mills; and a sister, Mary Jane Calgaard, Lake Mills.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred Disrud, Nov. 30, 2013; brother-in-law, Robert Calgaard; and a niece, Pat Preul.
