Ronald Keith Calgaard
Ronald Keith Calgaard, San Antonio, Texas, passed away at home Friday, April 10, 2020, after a brief illness. A service of celebration of Ron’s life will take place at the Marguerite B. Parker Chapel at Trinity University at a later date. Arrangements are made with the Porter Loring Mortuaries, San Antonio Texas.
Ron was born July 29, 1937, in Joice. He was the son of Palmer Calgaard and Orrie Nessa Calgaard. Ron graduated from Joice High School. He received his BA degree from Luther College. While at Luther, he met the love of his life, Genie Flom, and they had been married 60 years at the time of his passing.
He earned masters and PhD degrees in economics at the University of Iowa.
Ron began his career in higher education at the University of Kansas, first serving as professor of economics, followed later as vice president of academic affairs.
In 1979, he became the president of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and continued this calling for 20 years. After his “first” retirement, he became very active in the San Antonio community. He advised many organizations and groups in projects for the less fortunate. He was a mentor in fund raising and philanthropic planning.
He cherished his time with his family and friends, traveling the globe and watching the Spurs and Yankees. He was always a Hawkeye, watching them any time possible on TV. He was also an avid Fan of the Trinity Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks.
Ron is survived by his wife, Genie; his children and their spouses: Lisa Calgaard Sands and Peter Sands; and Kent and Francie Calgaard; his two grandchildren: Eliot Sands and Kathleen Calgaard; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Calgaard’ and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mark and Connie Flom; extended family and cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert.
