Robert Jerome Clark

Robert Jerome Clark, 84, Columbia, Mo., passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017, at his home, surrounded by loved ones. Private graveside services will be held in Maynard, at a later date. Robert was born Oct. 15, 1932, in West Union, the son of Russel Henry and Cora Mae (Chase) Clark. Russel passed away at an early age and Cora married Charles Abel, and together they raised Robert.
On Oct. 7 1955, in Ames, he was united in marriage to Shirley Adams, who preceded him in death.
He was married March 18, 2016, in Columbia, Mo., to Betty Chiaramonte, who survives at the home.
Robert was a 1951 graduate of Oelwein High School, where he distinguished himself as an All-American champion in track. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Education at Upper Iowa University. He spent his entire career teaching and coaching track and wrestling in Iowa. His passion was history. He established his own scholarship at his former high school and is awarded each year to a deserving student.
Robert was a kind and generous man, who was always ready to meet friends for lunch or just a cup of coffee. He enjoyed all sports, but was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He loved to travel the country visiting our national parks, history museums and presidential libraries. His love and devotion to his family was the foundation of his life.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Craig Clark and wife, Ainsley, Woodbury, Minn.; one daughter, Marshelle Clark, Columbia, Mo.; two grandchildren, Nolan and Julia; one brother, Darrill Abel and wife, Gerry, Ames; stepchildren: June Mysliwiec, Columbia, Mo.; and Mark Anthony Chiarmonte and wife, Melissa, Tampa, Fla.; and step-grandchildren, Brian and Michelle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; his first wife, Shirley (Adams) Clark; and one sister, Linda Abel.
