Robert Burdette Witham was born April 9, 1920, in Worth Co., on a farm north of Joice, to Irvin and Goldie (Greeley) Witham. He attended country school and Lake Mills High School, graduating in 1938.
On Sept. 8, 1940 Robert was united in marriage with Myrtle Flugum at the Lutheran parsonage in Thompson.
Robert farmed, raised chickens, and also worked for 23 years at Fleetguard. Robert loved music, reading, crossword puzzles, and most of all studying the Bible. He was a wonderful Christian father. He loved his family very much, spending time with them on many picnics and swimming in Clear Lake. He loved playing board games with us kids, and reading us Bible stories. He was a gentle soul, with a dry sense of humor. We often would test his patience, like us filling his grease gun to see how far we could shoot the grease.
When his wife, Myrtle, went to live at the Lake Mills Care Center, he packed an overnight bag to stay with his daughter Marilyn for a few days, which lengthened into 15 years. It was a good move for Robert and Marilyn. He spent the last four years in the Good Samaritan care center, Forest City. He enjoyed competing in the activities. He did enjoy winning. He was dearly loved by the staff there.
Those left to cherish his memory are his four children: Marilyn Heimdal, Forest City; Jeanne (Gordon) Hacker, Emmons, Minn.; Wendy (Barry) Bendickson, Forest City; and Richard (Lisa) Witham, Oracle, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren: Teresa (Bill) Clausen, Mason City; Tanya (Dale) Borg, Forest City; Valarie (Craig) Swalve, Garner; Victoria (Randy) Hopp, Palmetto, Fla.; Natalie (Jerry) Black, Chandler, Ariz.; Tamie (Jason) Brock, Forest City; Brad (Jennifer) Hacker, Lake Mills; Trisha (Mark) Meling, Forest City; Travis (Melissa) Hopkins, Forest City; Lisa Foerster, Britt; Whitney (Paul) Isaak, Snohomish, Wash.; amd Caitlin (Joel) Wahle, Ellensburg, Wash.; numerous great- and great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Arlene (Roger) Roberts, Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Myrtle, in 2012; a son, Rollin, at birth; a sister, Oakley Shafer; great-grandsons: Zachary Witham, and Mattew Hauge; son-in-laws: Merlyn Heimdal, Pete Riekena, and Wayne R. Hopkins; and numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
