He married fellow 1973 Buffalo Center graduate Lorie Albers (Bierle) July 14, 1979. During their 13-year marriage, Randall and Lorie were blessed with two children: Kyle Patrick, born in 1983, and Rebecca Lyn, born in 1987.

The two took joy in traveling, especially to National Parks and Yellowstone in particular.  Randy loved driving his Land Cruiser and spending time with his five grandchildren. He was a long-time Hawkeye fan, holding season football tickets for 43 years. He also enjoyed golfing, and even once got a hole in one, although he mostly kept it a secret.
