Spering Archer Scott, was born April 15, 1961. His parents, Richard P. and Joanne M. Scott, welcomed their son, along with siblings, Cheryl A. Scott-Evans, Gregory A. Evans, and Joel A. Evans.
He attended St. Bernard High School in Playa Del Rey, Calif., graduating with the Class of 1979. He attended Oregon State University, Corvallis, Ore., focusing on biology and genetics, graduating with the Class of 1986. Spering then attended Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., receiving a PhD in neurobiology/biology with the Class of 1993. He most recently had taken coursework through the Institute Of Lutheran Theology, Brookings, S.D.
Although he had a PhD, Spering chose to follow God and live a simple life. He worked with various mission groups and churches over the years, and served as an Intern Pastor with Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, from January 2014 to October 2015. He was currently serving the congregation of Bethel Lutheran Church, rural Scarville, as their pastor.
Spering developed a close relationship with the congregation of Bethel Lutheran Church during his time there. He was a devoted and faithful servant of the Lord, as well as to the congregation. He made a concerted effort to spend time with and care for each and every member. He led bible study groups, participated in confirmation classes, led Sunday and special services, performed weddings and funerals and baptisms—welcoming new members to the Lord’s family, as well as sending members on to their heavenly home. He visited the home-bound, ill, and those in care centers, bringing church to them. He truly was living as a servant of the Lord.
Spering was always a caring and giving person throughout his life. If there was someone in need, they were always a priority for him. He truly cared about people, which showed through the time and care he took with each and every person he interacted with. He spent time at many care centers, hospitals, food banks, homeless shelters, and anywhere else he felt there were people who may need some sort of help. He lived very simply, but would have given his last dollar to someone else, if they needed it more than he.
And even though he lived a long distance from his family, they were very important to him. He was very close to his nieces and nephews and made his visits memorable with his quirky and unique personality. His nieces and nephews will always remember their “Uncle Pickle Man” and his many silly hats, of which it seemed he had a hat for every occasion possible.
Spering is survived by his father, Richard P. Scott; his sister, Cheryl A. Scott Evans, and her husband, Brian; his brother, Gregory A. Scott; and nieces and nephews: Emily N. Evans, Madelyne J. Evans, Rose E. Evans, Hunter P. Evans.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Joanne M. Scott; and his brother, Joel A. Evans.
