Omar O. Juveland

Dr. Omar O. Juveland, 90, South Holland, Ill., passed away Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016. A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, South Holland, Ill. His remains will be buried June 2, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Elwood, Ill. Memorial contributions may be given to Redemmer Lutheran Church, or P.A.W.S. Smits DeYoung-Vroegh Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Omar was born in Lake Mills, June 2, 1926. He lived with his parents and four siblings. When graduation came along, he was named valedictorian and there was an American flag placed on his empty chair, as he had already been drafted and was serving in the Navy during WWII.
Omar began college on the GI bill at St. Olaf. He graduated with a B.S. in chemistry from St. Olaf College and went on to graduate from the University of Chicago with a masters degree in both math and chemistry and a PhD in chemistry.
Omar’s contributions to science during his career include 26 U.S. patents in areas like the polymerization process to catalytic conversion and catalysts. He retired in 1985 and spent most of his time at home, the place he was most comfortable.
He and his wife, Ruth, celebrate 62 years of marriage last June and he often said that he didn’t know what he would do without her. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren, above all else.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children: David (Karen) Juveland, Steven (Kim Marie) Juveland, Douglas (Sherri) Juveland, and Kim (Bob) White; grandchildren: Orion, Kelly, Katelyn, Sam, Sage, Jake, Erik, Lars, and Alexis; and sister, Sylvia Nash.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Alex; siblings: Allan Juveland and Gilma Henthorne; and brothers-in-law, John Nash and Dale Henthorne.
