Mavis H. Felland
Mavis H. Felland, 85, Lake Mills passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020 at her home in Lake Mills. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.., Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Sion Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Anthony R. Scalisi officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the services at the church Wednesday. Burial of cremains will take place in church cemetery Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to the Sion Lutheran Church and Cemetery.
Mavis Hazel Felland was born to Hans and Mabel (Hagen) Ulveness in rural Hanlontown, Worth County, Nov. 12, 1934. She received her elementary education in Worth County rural schools near Hanlontown, Northwood and Lake Mills. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1953 and graduated from Waldorf College in 1955. She also attended Luther College, Decorah. She taught elementary grades at Lakota for two years and four years at Clear Lake, before her marriage.
After marriage, she did some substitute teaching and was employed for 11 years in the Lake Mills Community Schools kitchen.
Mavis was a life-long member of Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was a Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher and served on the Board of Education. She was a member of the WELCA, serving a number of offices and the Education Circle.
On Sept. 16, 1961 she was married to Charles Felland, a high school classmate and they made their home in rural Northwood. Two children were born to this union; son, Eric, Rosemount, Minn.; and daughter, Marna, rural Lake Mills. In 1998, they moved their home to Lake Mills.
Family was important to Mavis, she enjoyed spending time with family. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special and attending all their activities was very important to Mavis. Family history was an interest to her and she was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, having visited her father’s birthplace and relatives in Norway several times.
Cooking, baking, letter writing, reading, traveling, jigsaw and crossword puzzles were all hobbies which she enjoyed/ Mavis was a special lady to many people and touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Charles, Lake Mills; children: Eric Felland and wife, Heidi, Rosemount, Minn.; daughter, Marna Groe and husband, Amos, rural Lake Mills; seven grandchildren: Joshua Felland, Cedar Rapids; Kari Felland, St. Peter, Minn.; Megan Felland, Rosemount, Minn.; Brittany Groe and fiancé, Jake Dubin, Waverly; Brook and her husband, Calvin Beal, rural Lake Mills; Ashley and Colby Groe, rural Lake Mills; two great-grandsons; Roan and Huxton Beal; two nieces; one nephew; and a number of cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Caroline Felland’ and brother-in-law, Gordon Felland.
