Mary Allison Carlson
Mary A. Carlson, 71, Lake Mills, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Muse Norris Hospice Unit, Mason City. A memorial celebration service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 25, at Church of Christ, 3493 Eagle Avenue, Fertile, with Pastor Rob Perry officiating.Mary’s family will meet and greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Sunday. Inurnment will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills, at a later date.
Mary Allison Carlson was the daughter of Francis and Elene (Raak) Alstott, Laurens. She was born Dec. 10, 1946. Mary was educated in the Laurens Community School and participated in music, sports, and speech. She was very involved with 4-H and supported that organization and youth throughout her life.
Mary moved to Lake Mills to pursue her career as a business teacher. She graduated from Wayne State College, Wayne, Neb., with a degree in business education and was recognized as the Outstanding Business Student at the ceremony. She taught school for 36 years at the Lake Mills Community School and like working with the students. She believed in and demonstrated good work ethic. Often she asked her students, “What did you learn today?” expecting a response of their reflective growth, or reminded the students—when you turn in this work to me, you are saying this is the best you can do. “Did you do your best?” Did you take time to prepare and turn in your best?” Mary promoted and demonstrated the Lake Mills Community School’s outcomes of being a lifelong learning, effective communicator, responsible citizen, critical/creative thinker, and healthy contributor. Mary was the first recipient of the Lake Mills Friends of the School award given to her in 2008.
Mary was married June 13, 1970, to John Carlson, Lake Mills.
Mary used her leisure time for gardening, reading, listening to music, and traveling. She enjoyed the camaraderie of her family and friends. She was an active member of the Church of Christ; Daughters of the American Revolution, which preserves history, promotes patriotism, and supports education; the beneficent organization Order of the Eastern Star; the Lake Mills Area Historical Society; and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, which honors women educators and promotes education and the teaching profession.
Mary is survived by her husband John, Lake Mills; son, Larry (April) Carlson, and their two children, Simon and Sophia, all of Van Horne; sisters: Judy (Craig) Brent, Kansas; and Gail (Allen) Hartman, Sioux Falls, S.D.; one brother, David (Carolyn) Alstott, Laurens; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
