Lillian Lorraine Steven Smith
Lillian Lorraine (Steven) Smith, 95, Northwood passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2019 at MercyOne Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills, with Pastor Rob Lanphere officiating. Inurnment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills. Her family will be at the church one hour prior to the service to greet friends. The family suggests that memorials be directed to MercyOne Hospice of North Iowa, or to Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills.
Lillian Lorraine Steven Smith was born April 14, 1924 at Corwith, the daughter of Roy and Lottie (Church) Steven. She was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church, Thompson. Lillian attended schools in both Thompson and Scarville.
She was united in marriage with Bruce Smith, Jr., March 4, 1943 at the Methodist church parsonage, Albert Lea, Minn., while he was home on military leave. To this union three sons were born: Robert, Richard and David.
Following their marriage, Lillian joined Bud in Harrisburg, Penn., and stayed there until he was shipped overseas during WWII. Lillian worked for a time in Algona, and when Bruce was discharged from the service, they started farming near Leland, in 1946. They went on to farm near Joice and Kensett, before purchasing their own place near Northwood in 1967, which they continued to farm until 1988. In addition to being a loving homemaker and dedicated farm wife, Lillian worked at Fleetguard Industries in Lake Mills from 1968 to 1987.
Lillian had always been an avid gardener, known especially for her strawberries, iris and daylilies. She also loved to spend time researching geneology with her sisters and her son David.
She leaves three sons to cherish her memories: Robert (Pam) Smith, Camanche; Richard (Renee) Smith, Chester; and David Smith, San Francisco, Calif.; four grandchildren: Michael, Sarah, Kristen and Michelle; four great-grandchildren: Kayla, Allison, Robby and Jonathan; two great-great-grandchildren: Serenity and Cedric; two sisters: Donnabelle Smith, Ankeny; and Delores Stroud, Graettinger; sisters-in-law: Marge Dann, Darlene Langfald, Dorothy Smith and Dorothy Steven; brother-in-law, Donald (Janice) Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bruce, in 2003; daughter-in-law, Susann Smith; great-granddaughter, Megan Barr; sisters: Lois, Mettie, Joyce, Verle, and Claribel; brothers: Elmer and Walter; and brothers-in-law: Harold, Barney, and Russell Smith.
