Floyd Dean Skellenger

Floyd Dean Skellenger, 91, Northwood, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood. A celebration of his life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Reverend Judy Converse officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood, with military graveside honors conducted by members of Our Buddies VFW memorial post 6779 of Northwood.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.
Floyd Dean Skellenger was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Lake Mills the son of William and Flossie (Stewart) Skellenger.  Floyd was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at United Methodist Church, Lake Mills.  Floyd received his education in the Lake Mills Community Schools.  
He was united in marriage to Verna Slattum on March 26, 1944, in Joice, and to this marriage four sons were born: David, Ron, Gary, and Dennis.
Floyd was inducted into the Army on April 7, 1945, in Forest City, and serviced his country honorably and faithfully during World War II until his discharge Oct. 31, 1946, at Ft. Sheridan, Ill.  
During his life, Floyd, his dad and brother, had their own business moving homes.  Floyd and his wife, Verna, built the Royal Motel, Northwood. Floyd also did a lot of carpentry work throughout the North Iowa area, and was the city superintendent in Northwood.  He worked for Carroll George in Northwood, and was the county commissioner in Worth County for four years.  
Floyd enjoyed remembering all the good times, reminiscing with family and friends.  Growing flowers, doing carpentry work, fishing, all kinds of sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. He enjoyed  following his grandchildren’s sports and school activities, and enjoyed playing 500.
Floyd was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church, Northwood Lions Club and was a member for 30 years and had perfect attendance, member of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post 6779 of Northwood, and was on the Northwood Volunteer Fire Department.  
Those left to cherish his memory are his children: David (Karen) Skellenger, Wells, Minn.; Ron (Marilyn) Skellenger, Northwood; Gary (Mary) Skellenger, Long Lake, Minn.; and Dennis (Jo) Skellenger, St. Louis Park, Minn.; nine grandchildren: Randy (Sarah) Skellenger, Michelle (Scott) Johnson, Mike (Shelly) Skellenger, Mark (Jenny) Skellenger, Rodney Skellenger, Sara (Brandon) Kobilka, Brian, Lance, and Kyle Skellenger; 11 great-grandchildren: Hunter and Dustin Johnson, Caitlin, Benjamin, Madeline, Grace, Tyce, Ashlyn, Averie, Kyan, and Kendrick Skellenger, and a great-grandchild to be born in September; brother, Virgil Skellenger, Houston, Texas; sisters-in-law, Shirley Chodur, Kensett; and Barbara Slattum, Dallas, Texas; as well as many extended family members and friends.   
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, William and Flossie Skellenger; wife, Verna Skellenger who died on March 24, 2010; two brothers: Leo and Lynn Skellenger; and sisters- and brothers-in-law: Eunice Skellenger, Ruth Skellenger, Freddricia  Skellenger, Cecil, Richard (Jannel) Slattum, Darrell (Mary) Slattum, Norma (Jerry) Alvey, and Kenneth Chodur.
