He was born June 5, 1942, in Forest City, IA to Maynard Stanford and Ruth Bergett (Arnevik) Langerud. He was baptized and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church. He attended Read country school through 8th grade, graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1960, then attended Mankato State University to pursue a business degree.
Over the years he had worked for Wells Canning Factory in Wells, MN, Winnebago Industries in Forest City, IA, and even drove a laundry truck in St. Paul, MN for a time.
On July 12, 1969, he was united in marriage to Susan Frances Bradley at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, IA. They had two children, Melinda Sue and Michael Stanford. They lived on his family farm where he raised corn and soy beans. Ernie had a strong devotion to caring for and preserving God’s land. He felt especially close to the Lord when he was working in the fields or mowing the lawn.
Ernie enjoyed the morning coffees in Vinje, Scarville, and Kiester. The family took yearly vacations in a motor home then in a van. Later Ernie and Sue traveled in the winter to Laughlin and Hot Springs Village or warmer locations for three or four weeks. Many crop checking trips were taken throughout the growing season. He enjoyed playing cards, working on the early computers, watching Mike’s tractor pulls, and playing with his three grandsons. He was a great tease; if they didn’t watch it, he would steal and hide their blankies. He belonged to North Prairie and later Salem Lutheran churches.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Susan of Leland, IA; his daughter, Melinda (Tracy) Farland and three grandsons, Spencer, Nathan and Eric of Mason City, IA; brothers, Calmer (Muriel) Langerud of Mesa, AZ, David Langerud of Blaine, MN; sister, Sally (James) Bevan of Ottumwa, IA; sister-in-law, Myrna Langerud of Des Moines, IA; one aunt, Delores Langerud of Forest City, IA; brothers-in-law, Robert (Karen) Bradley of Cedar Rapids, IA, David (Linda) Bradley of Veneta, OR; and sister-in-law, Kathleen (Scott) Reader of Tacoma, WA; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his son Michael in February 2003, brother Duane in January 2003, his uncle Bill and aunts Sadie (Clarence) Langerud and Oleen (Norman) Kriel.
