Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 26, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Scarville, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Visitation for Duane will be Sunday, Sept. 25, from 4-46 p.m. at Schott Funeral Homes-Mittelstadt Chapel, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Scarville.
Duane Douglas Buhmann was born June 11, 1953 in Fairmont, Minn., the son of William Herman and Lillian Emma (Brones) Buhmann. In 1956, the Buhmann family moved to their farm in rural Kiester, Minn., where Duane attended Kiester High School. Duane graduated with the Class of 1972. Following his graduation, Duane helped his dad on the farm.
On May 6, 1977, Duane was married to Lorene Sunde at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Kiester, Minn. Thanks to a friend of Lorene’s, who introduced them to each other, and the rest was history. The couple has lived on the same farm since 1977, and they were blessed with two children, Jennifer and Andrew. Duane deeply loved Lorene to the very end.
Sincere, trustworthy, loving, and hard-working are all words that can be used to describe Duane. He was a man who would do anything to help a neighbor and he never expected anything in return. On the farm at a young age, Duane learned the value of a hard day’s work, and the importance of thanking God for everything he had. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, and he adored his grandchildren endlessly. As a fertilizer applicator for many area farmers, Duane was a reliable resource. He also had a knack for seeking out people who were like-minded (meaning the “green and yellow” kind of people) to carry on conversation with. He spent endless hours in his shop working on projects. He also enjoyed taking care of his cows and raising calves.
Duane and Lorene loved to travel going on many trips with some really great friends. Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and the United States are just a sampling of the places they’ve been. As the kids jokingly and affectionally said, “Dad was spending their inheritance.” Making memories is more accurate. Either way, Duane and Lorene enjoyed each other’s company, even if it was just sitting in the driveway watching the cars go by.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville where he held various council positions through the years, and would always step up if a need arose.
Duane is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lorene, Lake Mills; daughter, Jennifer (Ryan) Wirtjes, Denver; son, Andy (Heather) Buhmann, Lake Mills; and five beautiful grandchildren who will miss having ice cream and bicycle rides with grandpa: Kasey, Krisanne and Brody Wirtjes, Denver; and Kennedy and Saylor Buhmann, Lake Mills. He is also survived by two brothers: Ronald (Janice) Buhmann, Boulder, Colo.; and Larry Buhmann, Burnsville, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Betty Buhmann; and many extended relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillian; a brother, Carroll Buhmann; sister-in-law, Janet Buhmann; and his in-laws, Henry and Mildred Sunde.
