Winter Guard performs Jan. 31 and Feb. 6

Since November, a group of 17 high school and middle school students have been meeting two mornings a week with the goal of creating an exciting show for the Lake Mills community. This “Winter Guard” is similar to a Color Guard in a marching band, but makes use of professional audio, performs indoors, and is more dance-based in their routine. The Winter Guard performances will take place Tuesday, Jan. 31, during half-time of the boys varsity basketball game, around 8:15 p.m., and Monday, Feb. 6, during half-time of the girls varsity basketball game, around 6:45 p.m.
The group will be performing to Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better,” by making use of two different flags, guard rifles, and dance. Rori Bowman served as student leader and Mr. Faugstad supervised rehearsals along the way. Kehan Knapp designed the staging, and Sarah Thursby wrote the choreography.
Raven Budach mentioned that there are “many first-year guard members, but the group created a great bond.” For those that were in guard during the fall marching season, Lauren Scholbrock agreed that “it is great to keep doing color guard throughout the year.”

What is “Treat You Better” all about? Rylee Bowman expressed that “the message is about love, respect, and lots of sass  . . . which is fun.
When talking about what to expect out of the performance, Melina Tyson stated that it begins with “a pretty and sassy dance, then splits to rifles and flags, then Hannah Evenson tosses an awesome ‘6’, then everyone joins in with flags . . . which is fun.”
