Waldorf University hosted its annual “Community Night” at Bolstorff Field over the Labor Day weekend. Attendees were treated to a potpourri of activities, performances, and dining. A steady stream of children marched up and slid down a student-manned bouncy slide in a never-tiring recursive loop of glee. Next to the bouncy slide, sat an accompanying bounce house in the shape of a tiger, that saw heavy use throughout the afternoon. S’mores were provided courtesy of Waldorf’s Biology Club; there was also a buffet of cook-out fare to be had on behalf of the university. There was an ample and congenial crowd in attendance throughout the afternoon—many townsfolk brought trucks and RVs for tailgating purposes. Young families could be seen mingling and wandering from activity to activity.
Things kicked off with a bang for the Waldorf Univ. men’s football team, as they scored on their first drive—which ensured that the game against Dordt College would be bookended by fireworks (as every Waldorf touchdown was confirmed by a celebratory blast). Unfortunately for Warriors’ fans and players alike, the fireworks finale would end up being the solitary reason to stick around Bolstorff Field all the way through to the end of the fourth quarter, as Waldorf—after leading for much of the first half—went down one point at the break and was ultimately upended by Dordt 61-40.
Luckily, the Warrior-faithful were saved from the depressing swing in momentum by an enlivening performance from Insphyre Fire Jugglers at half time. Their electric display of fire-breathing-and-wielding derring-do was the highpoint of what was a memorable Waldorf University Community Night for 2018. Even though the end result stung, Waldorf supporters still left with mostly smiling faces because of all of the fun that came before.
