Seniors see new horizons through virtual reality

Years ago, it wasn’t uncommon to see a person holding an odd device up to their eyes. In this device, they could see images of faraway places, and exotic wonders in stunning detail, as though they were really there. The device worked by placing slightly different images over the eyes and tricking the mind into believing it was a three dimensional image and in a different reality altogether. This device was the View Master, and many of us remember them well. While you won’t see many view masters in use anymore, it is the precursor to the modern, virtual reality headset that is becoming more popular all the time.
Virtual reality (VR) headsets that immerse users in computer generated worlds are becoming popular among video gamers, computer enthusiasts and surprisingly, therapists for their possible applications helping seniors. These sets have the potential to not only offer a few minutes of fun, but could also prove useful in calming symptoms of disorders such as PTSD, anxiety and Alzheimer’s. Some theorize that VR programs have the potential to unlock neural pathways that have been closed by neurodegenerative disorders. These headsets also have the ability to bring users who would otherwise be homebound or who have trouble with mobility to far off places as grand as the Himalayas or as peaceful as a childhood home.
VR may not be for everyone, however, and persons suffering from Epilepsy and seizures should consult with a doctor before using these technologies.
Virtual reality offers new opportunities for seniors that could not only prove fun, but therapeutic as well. Taking inspiration from an old optical illusion, seniors may soon find entertainment in immersing themselves in breathtaking worlds and treating mental illnesses with VR.
