North Central Iowa Genealogical Society Meeting
March 11, 2017 – 1:30 p.m. in the Lower Level Meeting Room - Clear Lake Public Library, located at 200 N 4th St, Clear Lake.
The CCC was a federal program designed to help the country recover from the Great Depression. The num-ber of CCC camps in Iowa totaled 29 while the number of Iowa men who participated totaled 45,846. Men enrolled for a period of six months and they could re-enroll successively to a maximum official pe-riod of two years, although some managed to finagle longer stays. What a genealogical and historical gold mine of information is contained within the surviving records from these camps.
• Enrollment Cards, which supply the name and address of the enrollee, their designated allottee’s name and address, date service began, camp assignment, discharge date, and reason for dis-charge.
• Applications and discharge notifications, which may contain related correspondence.
• Narrative reports and discharge certificates.
• Manuals and handbooks documenting enrollment policies, rules, and procedures.
• Correspondence, including letters to and from enrollees about camp experiences.
• Rosters indicating those enrolled at a given camp on a given date.
• Station lists, arranged by type of camp, which include camp locations and project information.
• Photographs documenting both projects and camp life.
Do you think you may have had a relative who participated in the CCC? This program will provide an expla-nation of this federal program as well as discussing where the surviving CCC records are kept and how to obtain copies.
The meeting is free and open to the Public
