New event to highlight fall landscape in Lake Mills

Funds raised to benefit Lake Mills Scholarship Foundation
Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 14, when the Lake Mills Graphic will host the first annual Brews & Ques fundraising event to benefit the Lake Mills Scholarship Foundation. The event will be held at Oakwood Park.
“This is something (host a fall event) we have wanted to do for the community for some time,” noted publisher, Terry Gasper. “Now that the scholarship foundation is up and running, we found a perfect organization to donate any money we can make off the event, while also hopefully showing the community a good time.”
As it is the first time around, Gasper said the plan is to start small, and have some success, so that the event will rapidly become a staple of the Lake Mills landscape and grow in size and events as the years progress.
“We have invited a number of area craft breweries to participate, and hope that most of them will be able to help us launch the event,” he added. While not yet operating, local 5 Alarm Brewing, has also been invited and has agreed to pass out samples of a variety of their upcoming beers to those attending.
In addition to local beer, the event will feature barbeque teams from around the area, in a fun competition for prizes. “
“We hope this will be a fun event for them as well—more than a true, certified competition—with judging being done by those who sample the foods, rather than judges,” Gasper said.
That does not mean the participants will not be competing for prizes, as first, second and third place prize money will be distributed based on entry money received.
The entry fee for barbeque teams is $25 per team, with a deadline of Friday, Sept. 29. Registration forms will appear periodically in the paper, and also be available on the Brews & Ques Facebook page. The event will be held rain or shine at Oakwood Park, and while it is free to attend, tickets are required to enjoy any of the food or beverage choices.
Tickets can be purchased for $2 each, or six for $10—with one ticket entitling a person to a short beer pour or a small barbeque sample. Two tickets will get a full pour and a larger barbeque sample.
“We want this to be affordable for everyone, and for $10 you can sample most of the beer available, or many of the barbeque items to see what you enjoy,” Gasper said. “Then, if you would like the bigger option, additional tickets may be purchased.”
The event is actively seeking commmunity sponsors for the event, and is also in need of volunteers to help the day of the event.
“The more the merrier, (Gasper said in terms of sponsors and volunteers). “Having never done this type of event, we welcome input and ideas from the community, to help make this a solid activity on which we can build in the coming years.”
Look in the Graphic in the coming weeks for more information on the event, as well as the Brew & Ques Facebook page.
