Local Election Guide

It is now time for any interested candidates to file for the upcoming city elections to be held Nov. 6.
Seats up for re-election in Lake Mills this year include, Mayor and two council seats.
Mayor Candy Hanna has indicated that she will be filing papers to retain that office, while the two council members up for election (Nathan Ostrander and Stephanie Steffens) have not indicated their plans.
Nomination papers can be picked up at the Lake Mills City Clerk’s office or at the Winneabgo County Auditor’s office, located in the county courthouse in Forest City, during regular business hours. They can also be downloaded from the Iowa State Secretary of State (https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/candidates/nompetnonpartisan.pdf).
Nomination papers started to be eligible for filing Aug. 28, and must be turned in by the end of business, Thursday, Sept. 21, again to either the city clerk or auditor.
Fifteen signatures of community residents—not just registered voters—are required to run for either  council or Mayor. The Mayor’s office is for a two-year term, while council terms are four years in length.
There is no limit on the number of nomination petitions one elector may sign.
An eligible elector is a person who meets all of the qualifications to register to vote. However, an eligible elector is not required to be a registered voter.
An eligible elector must:
• Be a citizen of the United States
• Be a resident of Iowa
• Be at least 17-1/2 years old (must be 18 years old by Election Day to vote or sign petitions)
• Live in the city or district for which they are signing.
