LMHS marching band to perform “To Honor the Fallen and Thank the Living” at Homcoming football game

During the homecoming game this coming Friday, Sept. 21, the Lake Mills High School Marching Band will pay tribute to those that have served or are serving in the military.
Under the direction of Nathan Sletten, the band chose to do a Patriotic Show called, “To Honor the Fallen and Thank the Living,” which will take place during halftime of Friday night’s game against Sumner-Fredericksburg. All veterans get in free to the football game.
The songs will include “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”; Music from the movie, “The Patriot”; “The Navy Hymn”; and God Bless America.”
“Each of the songs give you a different feeling. Some are upbeat and others are slow and really hit you emotionally,” said Brianna Renneker, 10th grade drum major.
Tenth grade clarinetist Olivia Schoonover added, “I like that we have a purpose with this show. We want to give a tribute to the fallen, but also thank veterans for fighting. We have something to want to be great for.”
There are 55 band members ranging from eighth grade to 12th grade. Sletten mentioned that each and everyone of them are important to the show, and are members of the band family.
“I have been incredibly moved by the work that has been done by our local veterans and community members with regards to honoring those who have served our country. We always have an amazing turnout for the programs on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day in Lake Mills,” said Sletten. “I thought this would be a great way for our students to reflect, pay tribute, and show our respect to those who have fought so hard to give us the freedom and opportunity to do what we do every day in school. I can guarantee you that this group of students is putting their blood, sweat, and tears into preparation for this show. I’m very proud of these students for their hard work, dedication, and ability to find purpose beyond the notes on the page.”
After the coronation of Homecoming king and queen, and before the performance during halftime, the band and community will welcome all those veterans and active service men and women to join them on the track for the tribute.
