Lake Mills Area Ministerial Association (LMAMA), is announcing that Monday, Dec. 17, over 90 Christmas Baskets/boxes will be distributed to families in the Lake Mills Community School District, at the Lake Mills Food Shelf, located in the lower level of the Truman Helgeson Civic Center.
These much-needed and appreciated boxes will include an abundance of food, ham, potatoes, pie and other Christmas goodies. There will be enough food to last two weeks, since the food shelf will not be open Christmas Eve Monday, Dec. 24, due to the holiday.
Pastor Doug Domokos, LMAMA, said, “This is truly a community teamwork project since the local 4-H groups come the afternoon before to assemble the boxes. LMCS nurse, Joan Krull, helps organize the families who receive the boxes and LMCS students help carry out the boxes.”
He also stated that LMAMA appreciates all that individuals, organizations, churches and businesses do, to make this project possible, and to the city for providing the space for the food shelf to work and store the food.
There is one small change from previous years. Hams will replace the turkeys in the boxes, due to the fact that some do not know how to prepare a turkey, and it is often too big for small, single-parent families to use. Turkeys will still be accepted if donated and given out in January to those that can use them.
Domokos relayed that, lately over 40 plus households, representing 100 plus persons, make use of the food shelf every week. The need keeps growing every year, and they have been providing this service for a number of years. The Lake Mills food shelf is open every Monday (except holidays) from 2-5 p.m.
