In honor of our veterans

The veteran for the month of September is Greg Scherb, rural Scarville. Greg served our country from 1972-1976 in the Navy. He took his basic training in San Diego, Calif. After completing his schooling there, Greg went on to Holy Loch, Scotland, and was on the USS Canopus as a Sub Tender.
Greg worked as a molder in the foundry on the ship for the next three years. He fixed things on the submarines. Greg’s last six months were spent in Charlston, S.C., on the Dry Docks replacing equipment.
In June 1976, he was honorably discharged as a second class E5 Petty Officer.
Greg mentioned that special memories from his years of service were the Scottish people and getting to travel Europe, and seeing the many different locations.
After discharge, Greg came back to the Scarville area and then went on to college on his GI Bill. After college, he worked various jobs, along with farming.
He married Rita Squier and they have two children: Danielle and Thomas.
Greg currently works at Larson Manufacturing, Lake Mills, and is on the Scarville Fire Department.
The Top of Iowa Quilters meet once a month on the third Monday at Salem Lutheran Church to make quilts for local veterans as a thank you for their service to our country. New members are welcome. If you know of a veteran that needs a quilt, please contact Dave Anderson, Bill Clark, or Robin Grunhovd.
