In honor of our veterans
The Top of Iowa Quilt Club would like to honor Bill Bakken as our veteran of the month. Bill served from July 1954 through July 1956. He did his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Ark. After that, he spent a couple of months at Fort Dix and Camp Kilmer in New Jersey, leaving in December 1954 enroute to Frankfurt, Germany, where he would be stationed to serve.
Bill worked in the 4th Division finance department. When he arrived in Germany, he stated you could still see some of the rubble from WWII.
After Bill finished his time serving, he came back to Chicago, Ill., and was honorably discharged. He returned to Lake Mills and started working with graphic arts after some college.
He later met his wife, Rita, in 1959. They married and made their home in Lake Mills with their three children: Tom, Rosalie, and Heather. They now have three grandchildren.
If anyone knows of a person they would like honored for their military service, please contact Robin Grunhovd at 592-4876; Dave Anderson at 590-6666; or Bill Clark at 590-2229.
