Freeborn Wind Farm receives unanimous approval from Minnesota Public Utilities Commission

Invenergy, a leading developer and operator of renewable and other clean energy projects, received unanimous approval with conditions for its Freeborn Wind Farm from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) the company announced today.
Xcel Energy plans to build the 200-megawatt wind energy project in Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa as part of its clean energy transition. By 2022, more than 75 percent of Xcel Energy’s Upper Midwest energy mix will come from carbon-free sources. The company, as one of the nation’s leading wind energy providers, has a vision to deliver 85 percent carbon-free energy in the region by 2030.
“Today is a great day for wind in Minnesota. The Freeborn Wind Farm will supply enough renewable energy to power more than 70,000 Minnesota homes and businesses every year,” said Dan Litchfield, Director of Renewable Development for Invenergy. “Invenergy is grateful for the PUC’s careful consideration of this project and, we are ready to get to work creating new jobs in and contributing new revenue to Freeborn County, MN and Worth County, IA.”
More than 50 project supporters traveled to St. Paul to attend the PUC hearing and be present as the Commission delivered its final decision. The 100-turbine wind farm, over half of which will be located in Worth County, IA, will begin construction in 2019.
Mark Davidson, a landowner from Worth County was among the supporters watching as the Commission approved the permit. “We believe in this project and are excited to see it pass through the permitting process,” stated Davidson. “The Commission made the right decision for the state, our families, and the environment.”
