Filing opens campaign season in earnest

Iowans will have a number of choices during the upcoming June primary and November general election, as Secretary of State Paul Pate over the weekend released a list of candidates who filed nomination papers prior to the March 16 deadline.
Headlining the list are no fewer than nine candidates for Governor. current governor, Kim Rynolds has no opponent in the Republican primary, but a total of eight (Nate Boulton, Cathy Glasson, Fred Hubbell, Andy McGuire, John Norris, Ross Wilburn on the Democratic ticket, and Marco Battaglia and Jake Porter under the Libertarian party) have filed for the right to face Reynolds in November.
U.S. Rep. Steve King faces not only a primary challenge, from Cyndi Hanson, but a full house of Democratic and Libertarian challengers, including: Leann Jacobsen; John Paschen; and, J.D. Scholten on the Democratic side, while Charles Aldrich is the lone Libertarian.
Closer to home, Rep. Tedd Gassman will not face any challenge in the primary, but will face off with Democrat Debra Jensen in the general election in November. The same holds true in Worth County, where incumbent Jane Bloomingdale has no opponent in the Republican primary, but will face Democratic opposition in the fall, as Tim Knutson filed his papers to run for the seat.

While making the March 15 deadline, no candidate has qualified for the ballot at this point. The deadline to file an official challenge to any candidate’s nomination papers is Friday, March 23, at 5 p.m.
