Crossing guards honored at monthly meeting

Nate Barrett and Eimmy Candelaria were honored at the May 9 monthly crossing guard meeting. Both were commended as the top crossing guards at Lake Mills Community School for 2016/2017. Each rose to the top of the group with their ongoing willingness and contributions to the team effort. Nate and Eimmy also served this year as the captains for their respective teams.
Nate, a sixth grade student enjoys earning Bulldog Pride tickets that he can spend at the school prize store and getting out of class early to be ready for the afternoon crossing guard. In school, Nate enjoys reading, and at home he spends free time playing video games.
Eimmy, also a sixth grade student says she likes being a crossing guard because “you can help people.” Her favorite subject is chorus. Eimmy’s hobbies are crafting, singing, and watching TV.
The crossing guard program was the brain child of Mr. Iron’s 2016, eighth grade “Project Citizen” class. They spent time researching, talking with officials, working out expectations, and ordering supplies. They also created a map of the area for training purposes, as well as a training video.
Crossing guards work two times daily, before and after school. The guards don bright orange vests and carry red “stop” flags. (Stop paddles have been ordered for next year.) The community has responded well to their presence.
The school extends their appreciation to the first ever Lake Mill’s crossing guard team for a great initial year. The students are as follows: Nate Barrett, Caycee Barrett, Madison Bennesch, Eimmy Candelaria, Madison Edwards, Alex Gonzales, Shyla Haugen, Xander Haugen, Bryce Johnson, Caden Matern, Gregory McCleary, Geraldo Perez, Tanner Reupke, Ondrea Vanderplaz, and Kristina Vancannon.
Next year’s team has already begun joining the current team members for regular monthly meetings which will continue through the summer. The meetings consist of training and team building activities. This new group is looking forward to continuing this wonderful service to the community.
