Lake Mills welcomed a new recreation director, Feb. 6. Amy Vrieze, 1989 graduate of Forest City High School, has taken over Lori Eekhoff’s vacated position.
Formerly, the position was known as Parks and Rec Director, but Mayor Candy Hanna explained, they split the position into two different jobs. The reasoning behind the decision was two-fold; the original position was too much for one person to do, and now they have added to the park director’s responsibilitites—taking care of the maintenance of the city’s buildings, as well.
Vrieze’s responsibilites will include planning and implementing all kid and adult activities for the city, along with the Aquatic Center.
“I am starting out with the activities that Lori did; Lori did a great job here in town. I kind of feel like I’ve got big boots to fill,” said Vrieze. “But, I’m adding some twists to certain things and new activities like the March Madness Dance we hosted with a DJ, for the third through fifth graders.”
With Vrieze’s passion for the outdoors and sports, she seems to be a great match for the job.
“I played all the sports in high school and then I went to Waldorf College to play softball and basketball, and majored in Physical Education.”
“It’s going to be great. I am looking forward to summer and getting everything started,” said Vrieze. “You know the people here have been ‘over-the-top’ nice. Very willing to help. They ask if I need anything. I have had multiple parents come to the office and say, ‘I can help coach, and if you don’t need me as a coach, I can help with something else.’ That’s been really awesome.”
