Blaze a trail for aging

May is Older Americans Month – an opportunity to celebrate the strength and vitality of older Americans, to raise awareness of aging issues, and promote healthy lifestyles.

This year’s theme, “Blaze a Trail for Aging” will be recognized by the Iowa Area Agencies on Aging with a statewide “friendraiser” walk! Elderbridge Area Agency on Aging will host walks in 10 of our service area counties on Thursday, May 26, including Cerro Gordo County and Mason City.  Check-in at the Mason  City Senior Activity Center, begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by a short program at 10:45 a.m. with the walk starting at 11:00 a.m.  The short walk is FREE and open to all ages.

To be eligible to walk, all individuals must sign a registration/release form prior to the start of the walk. Registration/release forms are available at the Mason City Senior Activity Center by contacting Roxanne Whipple or Judy Kingery.

To find a walk near you, go to www.i4a.org for more information.

Aging can be rewarding.  But for many, it is becoming more and more challenging.  Today, close to 16% of Iowa’s population is 65 or older.  By 2030, over 20% will be 65 or older.

Every day, Iowa’s Area Agencies on Aging, through 15 coordination centers and a centralized call center – LifeLong Links™ support all Iowans – aging, individuals living with disabilities, veterans, and caregivers of all walks of life.  Over 100,000 Iowans are supported annually.  LifeLong Links connects Iowans to Iowans – those in need with those who provide home and community-based services.

Elderbridge Co-Executive Director Donell Doering says “Through this event, we are pleased to come together with community friends to raise awareness about aging issues and at the same time have some fun.”

Some of the Iowa Area Agencies on Aging have had walks in the past.  This year’s walk is expanding to more regions and counties across Iowa.  Next year’s goal is to hold a walk in all 99 counties of Iowa.  Join a community walk and…Blaze a Trail for Aging!
