Waldorf University Athletic Department and Student Life will host the “Be a Champion of Life” speaking event featuring Richard Jensen on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 7-8 p.m. at the Boman Fine Arts Center located at 225 John K Hanson Dr., Forest City. The event is free to the public.
Featured athlete of an Emmy Award winning ESPN piece, Jensen, a former methamphetamine addict and ex-convict whose recovery reconnected him to wrestling, a sport that gave his life stability, has become an inspiration to thousands who struggle under the weight of addiction. Through his journey, individuals are able to realize that their past failures do not have to define their future. At the age of 36 he overcame all obstacles, began attending Clackamas Community College, and participated as a collegiate wrestler with an athletic career culmination of competing at the National Junior College Wrestling Tournament NJCAA’s in 2008.
Jensen went on to finish college and acquired a certificate in the automotive field, became fully ASE certified in all areas, and now owns the Affordable Car Doctor automotive repair shop. In the mix of all the changes he discovered a vision to share his story with the youth of the world and “Be a Champion of Life” was born.
With 15 years of sobriety under his belt, Jensen knows and understands the struggle many will face regarding addiction. His passion has become one focused on providing young people a vision of success no matter what obstacles may stand in their way. His journey is an inspirational message about overcoming addiction and realizing we are all in control of our future’s as long as our focus is on the right finish line.
