Snadhill Cranes make home in Lake Mills area
Originally spotted last fall near the Winnebago River by Dahle Park, Paula Carroll, recently sent us this picture she took just a few weeks ago in the same area.
“I thought I would let you know the Sandhill cranes are back,” she exclaimed.
She noted that last fall, she saw a family teaching a young one to fly, before heading south for the winter. She said that the birds will migrate through the Kearney, Neb. area again in the spring to reach their summer homes, of which rural Lake Mills now seems to be one.
“I had never seen them in northern Iowa or south central Minnesota until last fall,” she noted. “They must have liked the habitat to raise their little ones here.”
This year, she reports that the family includes two young birds.
